Good Luck to all the participants at the Westfield Health British Transplant Games

Billed as the largest ever British Transplant Games, athletes from across the UK will converge in Birmingham on Thursday 2^nd August to take part in four days of competitive sports activities, highlighting the lifesaving and transformational benefits of organ transplantation.

All athletes taking part have received a transplant and this year over 1,000 inspirational athletes and 2,000 supporters will take part, making Birmingham 2018 the biggest games yet.

Over 20 sports events will take place across four days at venues across Birmingham, including the University of Birmingham, Alexander Stadium and Stourport Cycling Centre.

All ages are represented at the games, with children as young as five years old taking part in events such as archery and the long jump. Competitive athletes are well catered for too, and have the opportunity to be selected to join Team Great Britain & NI for the World Transplant Games, which is being held in Newcastle and Gateshead in 2019.

Over 50 teams will take part in the opening ceremony on Thursday evening, parading from Birmingham’s Victoria Square to the Symphony Hall, which will include a Guinness World Record attempt for the largest gathering of organ transplant recipients.

The games not only celebrate all the athletes taking part but also highlights need for more people to talk to their families about organ donation and to join the NHS Organ Donor Register.
